What Bet Angel actually is
Bet Angel is a Windows desktop application that connects to your Betfair account through the official Betfair API. It replaces the website with a faster trading interface: one-click ladder trading, several ladders side by side, automatic stop-loss and green-up, and the ability to drive Betfair from Excel.
It was first released in 2004 and is still updated several times a year.

- One-click ladder. Click to back, click to lay, drag stakes, set stop-loss, automatic green-up at any tick offset.
- Multi-runner view (Bookmaker Mode). All runners in a horse race, or all selections in a football market, on one screen.
- Charting with multiple time-frames: pre-race volume, in-play price action, weighted moving averages.
- Tennis trader mode: point-by-point in-play view, hold-of-serve probabilities, automated point-by-point entries.
- Football trader mode: live goals, time-decay lay-the-draw assistants, automated correct-score management.
- Bot Builder: drag-and-drop automation with no coding. Less flexible than a custom Betfair bot in Python, but it covers common strategies.
- Order tracking: every order, fill and commission, exportable to CSV for tax records.
Guardian — the killer feature
Bet Angel Professional includes Guardian, a multi-market automation engine. You define rules (entry conditions, stake size, exit logic, hedge offsets) and Guardian applies them across many markets at once without you at the screen.
This is the main difference from Geeks Toy, which has no equivalent. Guardian can, for example, lay short-priced favourites across an afternoon's racing card, or dutch three selections automatically when a market opens.
Markets: all UK win markets, races between 14:00 and 18:00.
Entry: lay the favourite 5 minutes before scheduled off, at best lay price, max 3.20.
Stake: liability £20 per race.
Exit: back-to-green when 5 ticks in profit, stop-loss at 3 ticks adverse.
Excel automation (DDE/RTD)
Bet Angel sends live Betfair data to Excel through DDE and RTD: best back, best lay, weight of money, traded volume and last traded price, into any cell, refreshed live.
A formula can return an instruction such as "BACK 50" or "LAY 100", and Bet Angel reads that cell and places the trade. In effect it is a starting point for algorithmic trading without writing Python. Custom bots via the API are more flexible, but you have to build them; see our Betfair bot guide.

Basic is too limited for trading. Standard is the entry point for regular use. Pro is the tier to buy if you want Guardian, which is the main reason to choose Bet Angel over Geeks Toy.

Setting Bet Angel up the right way
The default interface is dense. This order keeps the first sessions manageable:
- Install Bet Angel and connect to Betfair with your normal Betfair login. No API key setup is needed for normal use.
- Open one ladder for one upcoming horse race. You are learning the layout, not trading.
- Practise without placing real orders. Learn the click positions for back, lay and hedge, and the keyboard shortcuts for stake adjustment and green-up.
- Switch to one-click mode only once you can place orders confidently in confirm mode. Staying in confirm mode is slower but safer.
- Place your first 10 trades at minimum stakes. The aim is to place trades correctly, not to make money.
- Open Guardian only once you can scalp manually. Automation multiplies whatever edge you have, including a negative one.
- Connect Excel last. It adds complexity you don't need until your manual workflow is solid.
Common Bet Angel mistakes
- Too many ladders open at once. Start with one or two.
- Guardian rules with no stop-loss. A rule with no maximum loss can drain a bankroll on a bad afternoon. Always set a session stop-loss in the rule.
- Excel formulas reading stale cells. If a formula uses a snapshot instead of the live RTD feed, Excel will trade on an old price. Test logic with print-only output first.
- Buying the wrong tier. The £14.99 Standard tier does not include Guardian. If you want automation across markets, you need Pro.
- Skipping the developer's YouTube channel. It covers in a structured way what otherwise takes a long time to work out alone.
- Trading on the Betfair website and Bet Angel at once on the same account. It is allowed, but orders from each appear in the other. Use one trading surface per session.
Final verdict
Bet Angel earns its 9.4/10 by doing the most things well rather than winning every single category. Cymatic free beats it on price, and BetTrader's multi-market layout is a strong alternative. But if you need automation, Excel, charting, sport-specific modes and a ladder in one tool, Bet Angel is the clear choice.
