Hardware & setup notes
Software only performs as well as the setup it runs on. The sensible minimum:
- Wired ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Wireless lag hurts scalping, where a tick of slippage at entry and exit compounds over many trades.
- 1080p monitor minimum, dual screens preferred. Ladders take a lot of horizontal space.
- Modern CPU (Ryzen 5 / i5 12th gen+) and 16GB RAM if you run several ladders and automated rules at once.
- UPS (uninterruptible power supply) if you trade in-play. A short power cut mid-match can cost more than the UPS.
- Live tennis or horse racing stream. Watch the action alongside the market.
Commission and how it interacts with software choice
No software changes your Betfair commission; Betfair sets it per account (typically 2% on net winnings in the UK). Software does change how visible it is mid-trade:
- Bet Angel and BetTrader show projected post-commission P&L on the ladder.
- Geeks Toy shows gross P&L by default; net is a setting you switch on.
- Cymatic free shows gross only.
A "+£3" on the ladder is really £2.94 after 2% commission. Switch to net P&L wherever the software allows it.
How to use the free trials properly
The trials are working software for about two weeks. To compare them fairly:
- Fix your strategy before the trial starts (lay-the-fav at T-300, scalping, lay-the-draw). Don't test strategy and software at the same time.
- Use the same stake size and bankroll across every trial.
