Every platform on this page connects to the Betfair API and lets you back, lay, and trade markets faster than the website ever can. The differences are in execution speed, ladder design, automation tools, sport coverage, and price. Our scorecards rate four things on a 0–10 scale:
- Features — ladder design, charting, automation, dutching, hedging, market views.
- Speed — order placement latency and refresh rate. For scalping this is the difference between profit and loss.
- Ease of use — how steep the learning curve is from first install to your first green-up.
- Value — what you actually get for the monthly cost given your trading style.
Scores are based on hands-on testing across pre-race horse racing, in-play football, and tennis between January and April 2026. Prices are publisher RRPs as of May 2026 — always check the vendor site for current pricing. We earn nothing if you click; affiliate links are clearly labelled.

If you only read one section, read this: most active traders end up on Bet Angel or Geeks Toy. The other four are real options, but each fits a specific use case rather than competing head-on with the top two. Detail below.
1. Bet Angel Professional
Bet Angel is the most complete piece of Betfair software ever shipped. The ladder is fast and configurable, Guardian lets you run automated rules across hundreds of markets simultaneously, and the Excel integration via DDE/RTD turns Betfair into a real algorithmic platform. If you ever want to graduate to automation without learning to code, this is the path.
Pricing: Basic £6.50/mo, Standard £14.99/mo, Professional £18/mo (£180/yr saves you £36). 15-day free trial, no credit card required.
Best for: serious pre-race scalpers, multi-market traders, anyone interested in semi-automation. Skip if: you're on a Mac without Parallels, or you only want a simple manual ladder.
2. Geeks Toy
Geeks Toy is the trader's trader app. Spartan UI, almost no menus, every action is one click. The ladder is the fastest manual interface on Betfair and the keyboard shortcuts are unbeatable once memorised. It runs on a 2014 laptop without breaking sweat — important when you're rendering 8 ladders during a Cheltenham handicap.
Pricing: £15/mo or £150/yr (saves £30). 14-day trial. One licence covers up to four installs on your own machines.
Best for: manual ladder traders, scalpers who hate clutter, low-spec hardware. Skip if: you want point-and-click automation — Geeks Toy is fundamentally manual.
3. BetTrader (Racing Traders)
BetTrader (sometimes still called Racing Traders BetTrader) is the strongest "third option" on Betfair. The Multi-Market grid view shows up to 16 races at once with one-click click-out trades — perfect for laying short-priced favourites across an afternoon's racing. Automation is solid if not Bet Angel-class.
Pricing: £12/mo, £108/yr (saves £36). 14-day trial.
Best for: multi-market traders, favourite-layers, anyone who wants automation cheaper than Bet Angel. Skip if: you want the absolute fastest pure ladder — Geeks Toy still wins there.
4. Cymatic Trader
The free tier of Cymatic is the most usable free Betfair software available. You get a full ladder, one-click trading, basic stop-loss, and even some simple automation — at zero cost. The Pro tier (£6/mo) adds multi-market view, advanced bot triggers, and unlimited stake sizes. It's the right answer for "I want to learn the ladder without paying yet."
Pricing: Free / Pro £6 per month / £60 per year.
Best for: beginners, occasional traders, free tier users. Skip if: you're scalping — the API refresh rate and execution latency are noticeably slower than Bet Angel/Geeks Toy.

5. Fairbot
Fairbot is intentionally narrow. It does back/lay/dutch with stop-loss and a small set of staking plans — no Excel, no advanced bots, no charting. That's the appeal: beginner traders pick it up in 30 minutes. Pre-race racing and simple in-play football are its sweet spots.
Pricing: £9/mo, £90/yr.
Best for: simple bettors who want one-click hedging without a 200-page manual. Skip if: you're aiming for full automation or multi-market trading — you'll outgrow Fairbot in a month.
6. The Grid (Racing Traders Grid)
The Grid takes the multi-runner grid concept further than anyone else — designed around correct-score trading, dutching multiple selections, and football match odds. It's a specialist tool. If you trade football correct score every weekend, it earns its place. If you trade pre-race horse racing, it's overkill and Geeks Toy is better.

Pick by trader type
The fastest way to choose is to pick by what you actually trade. Here's the cheat sheet:
- Pre-race horse racing scalper: Geeks Toy for pure speed, or Bet Angel if you want Excel-driven semi-automation. Both are tier 1.
- In-play football trader: Bet Angel for charting and automation. The Grid if you specialise in correct-score. See the football guide.

- Multi-market trader (lay-the-fav across cards): BetTrader's Multi-Market view, or Bet Angel Guardian.
- Brand-new beginner: Cymatic Trader free tier. Spend nothing while you learn the basics of trading.
- Mac user: all platforms are Windows-only. Run Parallels or Boot Camp, or pick Cymatic which is the lightest install on a Windows VM.

Hardware & setup notes
Software is half the equation. Without a sensible hardware and connection setup, even Bet Angel will let you down. The honest minimum:
- Wired ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Saving 30–80ms per order matters more than people admit. Wireless lag kills scalping.
- 1080p monitor minimum, dual screens preferred. Ladders eat horizontal real estate fast.
- Modern CPU (Ryzen 5 / i5 12th gen+) and 16GB RAM. Bet Angel with multiple Guardian rules and 6 ladders open will hit 30–40% CPU on older hardware.
- UPS (uninterruptible power supply) if you trade in-play. A 30-second power blip during a tennis match can cost more than the UPS.
- Live tennis or horse racing stream at slight delay. Watch the action through the same lens as the market.
Same horse, same race, same starting position. Lay at 3.40 for £100 stake, target back at 3.35 to green up.
On Geeks Toy with one-click ladder: order placed in ~120ms, filled at 3.40, hedged at 3.35 in 18 seconds. Net profit £14.61 after 2% commission.
On Cymatic free tier: order placed in ~280ms, missed first fill, hit at 3.42 instead. Hedge order took longer to match — closed at 3.36. Net profit £8.20 after commission.
Identical trade idea. Different execution. Over 200 trades a month, that gap compounds.
Commission and how it interacts with software choice
No software changes your Betfair commission — that's set by Betfair on a per-account basis (typically 2% in the UK on net winnings). But software does change how visible commission is to you mid-trade.
Bet Angel and BetTrader both display projected post-commission P&L on the ladder live. Geeks Toy displays gross P&L by default — you can toggle to net but it's an extra setting. Cymatic free shows gross only. For new traders this matters more than veterans appreciate: trading off a "+£3" tag on the ladder when commission will eat 6p of it teaches the wrong intuition. Switch to net P&L display in whichever software you choose.
How to use the free trials properly
The biggest waste is treating the trials as a marketing demo. They're not — they're working software for two weeks. To extract real value:
- Pick a fixed strategy before the trial starts. Lay-the-fav at T-300, scalping, lay-the-draw, whatever. Don't experiment with strategy and software simultaneously.
- Use the same stake size and bankroll across every trial. Otherwise you can't compare fairly.
- Trade the same market types each time. If you tried UK racing on Geeks Toy, do UK racing on Bet Angel. Don't compare apples to oranges.
- Track every trade in a spreadsheet with software, market, stake, P&L, decision quality. End of trial: which platform gave you the best risk-adjusted P&L? That's your answer.
- Don't subscribe on day 14. Take a 48-hour break, then commit. Snap decisions on the last day of a trial are usually wrong.
When (and why) to upgrade
If you started on free and you're considering a paid tier, the trigger should be a specific limit you keep hitting, not "more would be nice." Common upgrade triggers:
- Free-tier stake cap is choking trade size → upgrade to Cymatic Pro at £6/mo.
- Want one-click multi-market without latency penalty → upgrade to BetTrader at £12/mo or Geeks Toy at £15.
- Want automation across many markets → only Bet Angel Pro at £18/mo.
- Want Excel-driven trades → only Bet Angel.
- Want in-play tennis or football specialised modes → only Bet Angel.

FAQ
Do I need software at all?
For occasional betting, no — the Betfair website is fine. For active trading, yes. The website refresh rate is too slow and one-click trading is unavailable, so you'll lose ticks on every entry.
Can I use this software with Betdaq or Smarkets?
