Responsible Gambling

Betfair Exchange is a tool for trading and entertainment. It should never cause financial distress, harm relationships, or become something you can't control. This page is for anyone who needs to take a step back.

Gambling Should Be Entertainment

Betfair Exchange attracts a wide range of users — casual punters, matched bettors, part-time traders, and full-time professionals. Whatever your reason for being here, the same fundamental rule applies: gamble with money you can afford to lose entirely, and treat losses as the cost of entertainment, not as money to recover.

For the majority of users, Betfair is an engaging hobby or a serious side activity. For a small minority, gambling can become compulsive and harmful. Problem gambling is not a character flaw — it's a recognised condition, and effective support exists. The earlier you recognise it, the easier it is to address.

This site covers trading strategies and exchange mechanics. We don't guarantee profits, we don't suggest gambling is a reliable income source for everyone, and we are not responsible for any losses incurred as a result of using information on this site. Trading involves real financial risk.

Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Gambling becomes a problem when it starts affecting your money, relationships, or mental health. These are common signs to watch for.
Chasing losses — betting more to try to win back what you've lost
Spending more than you can afford, or borrowing money to gamble
Hiding your gambling activity from family or friends
Feeling anxious, irritable, or depressed when you're not gambling
Gambling to escape problems or relieve stress
Neglecting work, family, or social commitments because of gambling
Unsuccessfully trying to cut down or stop gambling
Lying about how much time or money you spend gambling
Spending money meant for rent, bills, or food on gambling
Gambling with increasing amounts to get the same excitement

If any of these sound familiar — even occasionally — it's worth speaking to someone. Free, confidential help is available. You don't have to have hit rock bottom for it to be a problem worth addressing.

Betfair's Responsible Gambling Tools
Betfair provides a range of tools to help you manage your gambling. They're all accessible from your account settings.
  • Deposit Limits: Set a daily, weekly, or monthly cap on how much you can deposit. Reductions take effect immediately; increases require a 24-hour cooling-off period. Set this before you start, not after a bad session.
  • Loss Limits: Cap the maximum you can lose within a defined period. Once the limit is hit, you cannot place more bets until the period resets.
  • Session Time Reminders: Set alerts to remind you how long you've been betting. Useful for keeping track of time during in-play trading sessions.
  • Reality Checks: Pop-up notifications at set intervals showing how long you've been playing and your net profit/loss for the session.
  • Self-Exclusion (Short-Term): Suspend your account for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or 6 weeks. You cannot reverse a self-exclusion once activated. This is useful for taking a planned break.
  • Self-Exclusion (Long-Term): Exclude yourself from Betfair for 6 months to 5 years. All marketing communications stop. Your account cannot be reopened until the exclusion period ends, and even then you must request reactivation.
  • GamStop (UK Only): Register with GamStop to exclude yourself from all UK-licensed gambling operators simultaneously — including Betfair. This is the most comprehensive self-exclusion option for UK residents.

To access these tools: log into Betfair → Account Settings → Safer Gambling. All tools are free. Betfair is legally required to honour self-exclusion requests immediately.

For Friends and Family

Problem gambling affects families as much as the individual. If someone you care about is showing signs of a gambling problem, GamCare runs a dedicated friends-and-family support line: 0808 8020 133. They provide advice on how to approach conversations, set boundaries, and get support for yourself, not just the person who is gambling.

Gam-Anon is a fellowship specifically for family members of problem gamblers — separate from Gamblers Anonymous. Meetings are available across the UK and Ireland. See gamanon.org.uk.

Safer Trading Habits
These aren't just responsible gambling principles — they're also good trading principles. The overlap is significant.

Use only a dedicated trading bankroll. Move money specifically set aside for trading into your Betfair account. Never dip into rent, bills, savings, or money earmarked for something else. If the trading bankroll goes to zero, you stop — not add more.

Set a loss limit per session before you start. Decide: if I lose £X today, I close the software and do not trade again until tomorrow. Write it down before opening a market. Changing the limit mid-session is not allowed.

Never chase losses. A losing session is not a reason to increase stakes. It's a reason to analyse what went wrong, then trade normally the next day. Chasing is the fastest way to blow a bankroll.

Take regular breaks. In-play trading especially — the speed and intensity of live markets creates a stimulation loop. Schedule breaks every 45–60 minutes. Step away from the screen.

Track your results honestly. Keep a simple spreadsheet. Date, stakes, P&L, market. Most people over-estimate how much they're winning and under-estimate how much they're losing. The data doesn't lie.

Know when trading isn't working for you. If you're losing consistently over 3 months, reducing stakes and going back to education is not failure — it's the right response. Many people who become profitable traders had a period of significant losses followed by a genuine reassessment of their approach.

See our bankroll management guide for practical rules to protect your trading capital.
