Your First Matched Bet on Betfair — Step by Step

The hardest matched bet is the first one. Once you've done it, the next 50 are just repetitions of the same pattern. This article walks you through every click of a complete first matched bet using a real bookmaker offer — "Bet £10, get £30 in free bets" — with real numbers, real Exchange prices, and the calculator inputs that make it work. Set aside 60 minutes and follow along live.

This is a sub-article in the Matched Betting Master Class pillar. The pillar covers strategy and breadth; this article is the live execution walkthrough.

Before You Start — Setup

You need three things ready:

  1. A bookmaker account with a "Bet £10, get £30 in free bets" offer (or similar). Sign up; deposit £20.
  2. A Betfair Exchange account, verified, funded with £100. Opening guide.
  3. Our matched betting calculator open in another tab.

The conceptual primer is in Matched betting explained. The Exchange mechanic is in lay betting explained.

The Walkthrough — 12 Steps

1
Open the bookmaker promotion page

Read the offer's terms carefully. Note: minimum stake (£10), minimum odds (e.g., 2.0+), single bet only, free bet expiry (e.g., 7 days), free bet excluded markets if any. Screenshot the terms in case of dispute.

2
Pick your qualifying bet selection

You want a market with closely-matched bookmaker and Exchange prices. Premier League Match Odds, big tennis matches, big horse races. Today's pick: Tottenham to win at 2.50 at the bookmaker, lay price on Betfair at 2.55.

3
Open the matched betting calculator

Inputs: back stake £10, back odds 2.50, lay odds 2.55, commission 5%, mode "Qualifying Bet (Stake Returned)". Calculator output: Lay stake £9.95 (approx), liability £15.42, max loss ~£0.30 either way.

4
Place the bookmaker bet

At the bookmaker: select Tottenham at 2.50, enter £10 stake, click bet. Confirm. Screenshot the placed bet.

5
Place the Exchange lay bet

Switch to Betfair. Find the same match Match Odds. Click "Lay" on Tottenham at 2.55. Enter the lay stake from the calculator (£9.95). Confirm. Screenshot.

6
Verify both bets are placed

Bookmaker bets section shows the £10 active bet. Betfair bets section shows the £9.95 lay matched. Screenshot both. The trade is live.

7
Wait for the match to finish

Don't watch. Don't add more bets. The trade is locked. Whatever Tottenham does, you'll be approximately scratch on the qualifying bet (£0.30 max loss). Result: free bet credit lands typically within 2 hours of match settlement.

8
Confirm free bet has been credited

Bookmaker emails confirmation. Account shows £30 free bet balance. Read the free bet terms again — minimum odds (typically 1.5+), expiry, excluded markets.

9
Pick your free bet selection

Higher odds extract more value from the free bet. Aim for 5.0-7.0. Today's pick: Manchester City to beat Brighton 3+ goals at 5.50 at the bookie. Lay price on Betfair: 5.60.

10
Calculator for free bet extraction

Inputs: back stake £30, back odds 5.50, lay odds 5.60, commission 5%, mode "Free Bet (Stake NOT Returned)". Calculator output: Lay stake £25.10 (approx), liability £115.46, profit £23 either way.

11
Place the free bet at the bookmaker

Select Man City over 3 goals. Enter £30 stake using the "Use free bet" toggle. Confirm. Screenshot.

12
Place the lay bet on Betfair

Click "Lay" on Manchester City over 3 goals at 5.60. Enter the calculator lay stake (£25.10). Confirm. Screenshot. Match settles. Profit: ~£23 either way.

The Maths Recap

Net P&L

Qualifying bet: ~£0.30 loss. (Treat as the cost of triggering the £30 free bet.)

Free bet extraction: +£23 either way (already net of 5% commission).

Total profit: ~£22.70.

Time invested: 30-60 minutes for first bet (slower because of learning).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Wrong selection at one of the two venues. Always verify Manchester City Match Odds (bookie) = Manchester City Match Odds (Betfair). Watch BTTS, Over/Under, Both Teams Score — these are different markets.
  2. Wrong calculator mode. "Stake Returned" vs "Stake NOT Returned" is the most common error. Free bets typically don't return the stake; double-check the offer terms.
  3. Missing minimum odds requirement. "Minimum odds 2.0" excludes 1.99. Always read the small print.
  4. Placing both bets at the same prices but big slip between bookie placement and Exchange placement. Place the lay first when possible, or use software for near-simultaneous order entry.
  5. Insufficient Betfair balance for liability. A £30 free bet at 5.6 lay odds requires £115+ Betfair balance available. Check before clicking.

What to Do After Your First Bet

  • Withdraw your initial bookmaker deposit after the bookie's withdrawal restrictions clear (typically after the qualifying bet settles).
  • Move to the next bookmaker offer. 30+ UK bookies have signup offers worth £15-£75 net each. Three months of focused work can clear £600-£1,200.
  • Read about reload offers. Best matched betting offers 2026.
  • Consider a tracking subscription. OddsMonkey or Profit Accumulator (£15-£30/month) automate offer-finding. Pays for itself in single offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the first matched bet take?

30-60 minutes for absolute beginners. By bet #5, you'll be at 15-20 minutes per offer. Pros knock them out in 5-10 minutes.

What if my qualifying bet wins?

Doesn't matter. The lay bet on Betfair cancelled out the result. Either way you're approximately scratch (~£0.30 loss).

What if Betfair price moves while I'm placing?

If it moves only 1-2 ticks, the trade still works. If it moves 5+ ticks, recalculate the lay stake. Software like Bet Angel reduces this risk by simultaneous placement.

Will the bookmaker close my account?

Maybe — eventually. Most matched bettors get gubbed at one or more bookies within 6-18 months. Avoid gubbing covers mitigation.

Is this really risk-free?

The maths is. Execution mistakes (wrong stake, wrong selection) introduce real risk. Always use the calculator and verify every input.

Honest Risk Note

Matched betting is risk-free only when executed correctly. Every step matters. Always use the calculator. Always verify the bookmaker selection matches the Exchange selection. BeGambleAware.org if betting is causing distress.
